Our Story
A Legacy Rooted in Florida
At Alligator Florida, our work is rooted in a deep respect for craftsmanship, conservation, and the natural heritage of Florida. Every piece begins with locally harvested alligator, sourced under strict regulations set by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and in full compliance with CITES. Florida stands as a global model for responsible wildlife management, allowing us to create pieces that embody both authenticity and sustainability.
From harvest to final stitch, each creation remains entirely within Florida. Our skins are tanned in the renowned Sebring Tannery, then handcrafted one at a time by skilled artisans to exacting standards. No two pieces are ever alike, and every item is fully traceable from harvest to hand. We work exclusively with alligator leather—the gold standard of exotic materials—valued for its unmatched quality, natural distinction, and refined character. Above all, we stand behind every piece we create, committed not just to meeting expectations, but to delivering something truly exceptional.

Understanding Genuine Alligator Leather
Alligator leather is regarded as the highest standard in exotic materials, distinguished by its refined texture, natural symmetry, and exceptional quality. Compared to other exotic leathers such as crocodile or caiman, alligator consistently commands a higher level of craftsmanship, rarity, and value—reflected in both its performance and its market position.
Within the crocodilian family— which includes American alligator, saltwater crocodile, freshwater crocodile, caiman, and gharial—each species produces distinct leather characteristics. Among them, American alligator is widely recognized as the most premium, followed by saltwater crocodile, freshwater crocodile, and caiman.
Because of these natural differences, true alligator leather is defined by specific physical traits that set it apart in both structure and pattern. Understanding these distinctions allows buyers to confidently recognize authenticity and appreciate the value behind a genuinely crafted piece.

What You Need To Know
Tiles Pattern
Alligator and Crocodile Leather Identification
Alligator and crocodile leathers are both recognized for their distinctive tile-like patterns; however, subtle structural differences become evident upon closer inspection. In alligator leather, the tiles are generally less uniform, featuring natural variations and fine surface lines that remain visible even after finishing. These organic imperfections contribute to the material’s authenticity and character.
In contrast, crocodile leather typically presents a more uniform and symmetrical tile structure. Individual scales often feature a small central pore, a natural remnant of the hair follicle unique to crocodilians. The transition from belly tiles to flank areas is also more gradual in crocodile, whereas in alligator, this shift is more abrupt and defined.
Back Horns
The Natural Markings of Crocodilian Species
Across all crocodilian species, the neck area features small raised formations commonly referred to as “horns.” These markings follow distinct and consistent patterns that vary by species. In alligator, they are typically arranged in two rows of two, while crocodile species often display a different configuration, such as two rows of four and two.
These characteristics are most clearly visible in hornback cuts, where the natural structure of the neck is preserved. This cut allows the unique patterning of each species to remain intact, offering a clear point of distinction between alligator, crocodile, and caiman leathers.
Umbilical Scar
A Natural Signature of Authenticity
Both alligators and crocodiles feature an umbilical scar, though its structure differs significantly between species. In alligator leather, the scar forms an elongated, web-like pattern integrated within the natural tile structure of the hide. In crocodile leather, the scar is typically more subtle and less pronounced.
Because the umbilical scar in alligator is uniquely defined and consistent in structure, it serves as a reliable indicator of authenticity, offering an additional layer of identification for genuine alligator leather.
Caiman
The Most Common Exotic Leather Alternative
Caiman leather is generally considered less refined compared to alligator and crocodile due to its smaller hide size and denser bone structure. This often requires multiple pieces to be joined together, which can affect overall uniformity in design.
In terms of durability, caiman leather is more rigid and prone to surface cracking when flexed over time. Its texture also absorbs dye less evenly, often resulting in a more irregular or blotchy finish compared to the smoother and more consistent coloration found in alligator leather. These differences make caiman a more accessible but less premium alternative within exotic leather craftsmanship.
